The call from
our company president came at 1:17pm March 2 while I was on the road to
Bataan.
He inquired if I would be
available to go immediately to the Visayas to help
out. I readily said yes for I believe
that official business trumps pleasure any day of the week. With that affirmative response, I instructed
the driver to make a U-turn and go back to Sucat so that i could pack for my
trip to the Visayas on the early morning hours of March 3. I texted also the
BDM Race Director that I would not be able to make it for the 10 pm gun start
later in Mariveles.
Thus, it came
about that I became a non-starter in the 2013 Bataan Death March 102K
Ultra. It is the first time in 3 years
that the Ateneo de Naga HS Batch 1983 does not have a runner-participant in
this historic 102-km ultramarathon. My
dream of improving on my 17 hr 45 min time will have to wait for another
year. Too bad, I had it all planned out
to hit a time of 17 hr 15 mins. 12 more
months of waiting.
No regrets for
me. Our company has been good to its
employees. The company has invested in
its people. This is one of those times
to show that the investment is a wise one.
