I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

BALIK ALINDOG PROGRAM: An Open Letter to My Fellow 83neans

Dear fellow 83neans,

Christmas cheers are upon us.

In this season of giving, allow us to gift  you a shirt that symbolizes the start of the Balik Alindog Program (BAP) of our Ateneo de Naga High School Class of 1983.

Our  Balik Alindog Program came about as a result of our desire to share with you, our batchmates, the knowledge that having an active exercise lifestyle is very much beneficial to our health and wellness.  Since finishing our first 42-km race in 2010, the running 83neans have journeyed thru countless fun runs, marathons and ultra marathons and this adventure has helped us significantly in feeling young and alive.

But don't take our word for it. We quote studies from the Mayo Clinic, the  first and largest integrated nonprofit medical group practice in the world.  It published the 7 Benefits of Regular Physical Activity and they are:

1. Exercise controls weight.
2. Exercise combats health conditions and diseases.
3. Exercise improves mood.
4. Exercise boosts energy.
5. Exercise promotes better sleep.
6. Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life.
7. Exercise can be fun.

Interested?  Good and I hope it is not just because of no. 6.

So how does our BAP work?  Simple, upon receiving the BAP shirt, go for a regular walk in your backyard or run around the neighborhood or bike in the province or hike up a local mountain. You can do it solo or you can do it with your barkada in high school. Make sure to have a photo and share it with the rest of our batchmates via our facebook group  or a comment in this Bicolano Penguin article. Then if you enjoyed the exercise, kindly talk about it to your family and friends. More importantly, do it again and again and again. "To infinity and beyond."

One more thing, you can also order the BAP shirts from our classmate Batu as Xmas gifts to your 83nean barkada in high school.

Health is wealth. This is more true as we enter our golden year(s).

Enjoy our Christmas gift.  Merry Christmas.

Maraming salamat. Dios mabalos.

Vicboy

Way to go Ernie. Spoken like a true ultra runner. Happy to note that the Balik Alindog Program is generating a "pay forward" attitude among us. Thank you for your generosity.

Beyond the "Por da Lab" 83Neans "cum-motto" coined by no less than a fellow accomplished runner and a gym rat at the same time, Allen T., our Balik Alindog Program comes as timely as we aproach the half century mark of our existence. It's never too late to get started to get ourselves revved up in any way we can and embrace the new "Golden Boy Look": Oragon pa! Momoy padi, coming soon an shirt mo! Thank you Por da Lab asin maogmang Pasko saindo gabos!!!

At the moment I'm on PT at St Luke Global for my shoulder injury so I see a number of patients mostly had stroke aging 50 and above..When I see them, it reminds me to do exercise and not suffer what they had suffered. I think it is time for us to do healthy living (go on diet) and do exercise at least once a week. Working at a BPO on mid/night shift takes away most of my time so it will be difficult for me but I thing I need to work out and reduce weight for a good future. Thanks for the encouragement!

As a matter of fact I will have to admit that my sedentary lifestyle is beginning to take its toll on my body. This time dakul ng namamate na makukulog sa hawak; joint pains/muscle pains are getting frequent and some other signs of physical weakening. Malamang ilan sa atin sa batch ang may arog na kaning mga namamate so vicboy's and the other running batchmates' advocacy in promoting healthy physical exercises is timely considering we are in our 50's na. Mabalos saindo mga 83neans Running Men for your encouragements sa kagabusan kan batch 83. I am with you in the 'Balik Asim este Alindog Program'. Pordalab! - Norman bATuRiaNo
