I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

CHALLENGE RUN 2023 & PACK WALK FOR A CAUSE: Take the Challenge and Make a Big Difference

 "Serving a World in Need."

There is a new tagline for the Lions International , which is the master brand of the unified Lions Clubs International and  Lions Clubs International Foundation. It is "Serving a World in Need." The tagline is a public facing message that quickly tells the world what all  48,000 Lions Clubs do all over the globe.

And, what do Lions Clubs do all over the world?

The quick answer is a ton of good. But perhaps a brief discourse on its slogan and motto could provide a bigger and rightful context.

Lions Clubs have both a slogan and a motto

In the early 1920s, the slogan "Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safety" - an acronym for the word Lions -  was adopted. The words suited the times. With the Great War (World War 1) just ended, patriotism was foremost on the minds of the American people.

But as the Lions movement grew beyond America's borders to Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world, Lions began looking for other words to describe their mission and work. In 1954, after a world-wide international motto contest, the two-word motto was adopted:  "We Serve."

Lions serve in so many ways.  Its mission pillars provide a big picture overview of how it has served its communities and society in general. The Lions mission pillars are: Improve health and well-being; Strengthen communities; and Support those in need.

Lions International is a global organization, just like the United Nations. In fact, there exist a unique and close relationship between these two global organizations. In 1945, Lions founder Melvin Jones and a couple more Lions past presidents were asked to help develop the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) charter for the UN.  Since then, these two global organizations have co-operated on many humanitarian ventures. Lions have provided aid and manpower for the projects of several UN agencies like the UNICEF, WHO and UNESCO. In 1978, the UN started observing a day, sometime during the month of February or March, as Lions Day at the United Nations (LDUN).

As a global NGO, Lions International will continue to focus on global causes: childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, the environment, humanitarian efforts, hunger, vision and youth.

It is in this light of Lions'global causes that we see the Challenge Run 2023 (and Pack Walk for a  Cause)  event scheduled for Aug 20, 2023 at the C6 Road, Taguig City.

Inquired as to why name the event Challenge Run,  the Overall Fun Run Director Edwin Malaras replied:

One reason is that we all know that we can do something good to our self and to others but there are many excuses bakit hindi natin ginagawa.  So we want to challenge everybody to join this event.  By doing so, makakatulong tayo mismo sa sarili natin in terms of physical activity and at the same time we can extend our help to the beneficiary of the event. That is why we named it "Challenge Run."  Let's Challenge our excuses and make a difference.

Well said by a true Lion.  And the Lions of the 4 aforementioned clubs have been busy preparing for the event and drumming up support and interest for it. The organizing team even came up with a  teaser video which is getting many excited for Aug 20.

Pawcited even.

My dog Freedom excited and pawcited already for the Challenge Run 2023.

I showed the teaser video to my energetic Jack Russell Terrier (JRT).  Freedom is jumping  up and down. He is visibly pawcited. If only Freedom can speak, he would have quoted  words from H.G. Bohn

Come Aug 20 morning, Home for my Freedom  will be C6 Taguig at the Challenge Run 2023 & Pack Walk for a Cause. He will be a Lion. And so do many more runners and pack walkers.

See you all.
