I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

DAVIS CUP AT THE 2012 TINAGBA FESTIVAL

Growing up in Iriga City, I got to enjoy the sports of Lawn Tennis  - my very first sports ever.  It is indeed with a special sense of pride and joy that I learned about the very good news that the world-famous Davis Cup competition will be in my place of birth this February 10-12 as one of the major activities lined up for the  2012 Tinagba Festival.

Davis Cup: Philippines versus Oceania

2012 Tinagba Festival

The Philippine Davis Cup Team (ranked 41st in the world) will face the Oceania Davis Cup Team (ranked 66th) in the 1st round of the 2012 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II.  There are five groups within the Davis Cup Competition:  World Group, Group I, Group II, Group III, and Group IV.

The Philippines is top seed in the Group II (which also includes Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Pacific Oceania and Sri Lanka), after being relegated down from the much stronger Group I after losing to Chinese Taipei in Cebu last year.  Team captain for the PHP  Davis Cup team is Cecile Mamiit and includes Jeson Patrombon, Johnny Arcilla, Treat Conrad Heuy, and Ruben Gonzales.

The Pacific Oceania is composed of islands in Micronesia.  Per the regional newspaper, The Marianas Variety, the members of the Oceania Davis Cup team are Danny Llarenas of Guam, Wes Nott of the Marshall Islands, Michael Leong of the Marshall Islands, Cyril Jacobi and Team Captain Cyrille Mainguy of Vanuatu.

The venue of the tennis competition is the covered hard courts of the University of Saint Anthony.

Winner of this 1st round battle between the Philippines and Oceania will face the winner between Pakistan and Lebanon at the 2nd round scheduled on April.

The National Government has officially declared Saturday February 11, 2012 as  a Special non-working holiday in Iriga City by virtue of Proclamation 319 issued by the President Noynoy Aquino through the Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on January 19, 2012.

I also saw a big billboard at the busy EDSA, near Cubao of the Tinagba festival.

The local government of Iriga City headed by  Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmin has certainly been busy promoting the Tinagba festival and the tourism potential of our place.

A lot of festive celebrations happening in Iriga this 2012 Tinagba Festival.

Dagos po kamo sadi Iriga.
