I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

PAYING IT FORWARD: TBR Dream Marathon Pacer

EmoticonPaying it forward is an uplifting idea, one that has long captured the attention of literary luminaries.

TBR DREAM MARATHON 2024: Pace it Forward

#PayingitForward

Awake already in the way too early morning hours of the 18th of February, I found myself running behind a bunch of runners dressed in funky dinosaur suits on the asphalt roads of Filinvest Alabang. Hashtagged on the back of their yellow shirts were the words "Paying it Forward." These sane individuals are,  after all,  acolytes of The Bull Runner herself who preached about building a running community where members pay it forward.

2013 TBR DREAM MARATHON: Paying Forward via the Pacer Way

My pacer bib

Come the early morning hours of Februray 24,  I will be on  pacer duty at the 2013 The Bull Runner Dream Marathon.

BIRTHDAY RUN-RAISER: Running it Forward for Fatima Integrated Farm School

September 11 is a day with a lot of historical significance, either bad or good, depending on one's own point of view.

Sex in Ultra Marathon?: My First 80km Mayon360 Run

EmoticonBlogger’s Note:

This article by Noel “Ghibz” Guevara is part of the series that the Bicolano Penguin is doing on the recently-concluded 2014 Mayon 360 Ultra.  Our years of experience participating in this most famous of Bicol ultras have shown to us that indeed the ultra way of life is full of color and challenges.  Who better to write a story about it than Ghibz who is  one of the more engaging  and eloquent classmates in the Ateneo de Naga HS Batch 1983.  He had a “shortness of breath” (SOB) experience after his gallant finish last April 5 but the way he handled the challenge that is the Mayon 360 showed to us all that the SOB decidedly  stood for “story of bravery.Emoticon

Now, I got your attention.

Our friend, HS batchmate and  ultra-marathon ‘maestro’ Vicboy de Lima requested me to share my insights of my first ultra-marathon experience in the just concluded Mayon 360 80km Run in Legazpi City, Albay last Saturday, April 5, 2014 .

2016 NEW YEAR'S RUNNING RESOLUTIONS: Going Down to 69

Day 1 of the New Year 2016 had me running early in the morning inside a famed cemetery with a fabled runner. The place was foggy and soon it was drizzling.  But this did not stop us. We relish the run and for me, an early morning run is an appetizing venue for some introspective thinking. Many a run like this has produced some great or crazy (or both) ideas for me.

2017 TBR DREAM MARATHON: Pacing the Wolf Pack

2012, 2013, 2014, &  2015. These are the years I volunteered as a pacer at  The Bull Runner Dream Marathon. Come the early morning hours of Feb. 19, I was gunning for my 6th deployment as a pacer at the 2017 TBRDM.  Although a graybeard already, I continue to have that high sense of excitement everytime I go on pacer duty.  Perhaps it has something to do with the special opportunity of  paying it forward, in the words of its founder Jaymie Pizzaro.  Most definitely, the idea of helping a fellow runner chase his or her  dreams is very appealing.

THE BULL RUNNER DREAM MARATHON 2015: Pacer Duty for the 4th Time

Inspired by the idea of "Paying Forward", the Bicolano Penguin (BP) has been volunteering for pacer duty the past several years at the Bull Runner Dream Marathon (TBRDM) in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa. Being a member of the first batch (2010) of TBRDM, I felt that the best thing an elder can do is to help the young ones.
