I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

BDM 102-KM ULTRA : LET’S GET IT ON

The night and day of reckoning is finally upon us this March 3-4, 2012 weekend.  Come 9pm this March 3 at the Km 0 marker in Mariveles, Bataan, 191 runners will assemble  for the start of the Bataan Death March 102-km ultramarathon.  Gun start is 10:15pm sharp.

It is with both pride and joy that I (Bib #667) will be part of that starting group, so will be my 3 Ateneo de Naga HS Batch 1983 classmates:  Bob Castilla (Bib #484) , Ernie Badong (Bib #422) and Ruben “Fards” Fajardo (Bib #590).

Are we ready?  No doubt Bob, Ernie and Fards will finish the 102-kms well before the 18-hour cut off time.

How about the “penguin” in the band of brothers?  How about runner with Bib # 667?  Am I ready?

After two marathons (Singapore & Condura), a 50-km test run (Mariveles to Abucay) , a 52-km bootleg run (Abucay to San Fernando), a handful of half marathons and many long weekend runs in Camp Aguinaldo and South Bay, I think I am a ready.  With the help  of my fellow 83nean runners, the support of my family and company, the inspiration of fellow runners,   and the guidance of the race director, Bald Runner, I will give it my best to finish the BDM 102Km ultra.   Yet, I will continue to pray for Divine support and I will ask my friends to pray, too.

But in praying, I will remember the words of St. Augustine of Hippo.  To paraphrase the great saint and thinker:  “Pray as though everything depended on God.  Run as though everything depended on you.”

Action and prayers.  Cool combo.  Let’s get it on.....................

Thanks Ernie for always being positive. Last Mar 4, we finally accomplished our dream of finishing the Bataan Death March 102-km ultra. Congratulations to all finishers. There are many stories to tell but for now I will rest my tired body and spirit.
