BPI VERTICAL RUN: An 83nean in 5th Place

A batch member of the Ateneo de Naga High School Class of 1983 is in the Top 5 of a running event, again.

It is not the uber-prolific Bob Castilla as what many would expect. This time it is Ernesto Venancio Palencia Badong of Naga City and Baao, Camarines Sur. Last November 17, Ernie placed 5th  among 60 runners in the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Vertical Run.  He ran faster than  younger runners as he showed his competitive side. No doubt about it, our batch mate with the killer smile has a killer finishing kick.

The Medal

The said running event was open to runners employed by BPI.  It involved running   on ground level for a short distance then bursting up the stairs of the BPI Building (located at the corner of  Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas) for 20 storeys. The 60 runners were released in 3 batches for spacing to avoid clogging the stairways.

The BPI Vertical Run is a joint undertaking of the BPI Runners Club and the Total Quality Office of the bank.  The event is to raise  better awareness of environmental concerns and how we can help as individual human beings.  The tagline of the event is "Saving Our Planet One Step at a Time." By using the stairs, we can contribute to savings on electrical consumption for the elevator.

Vertical running events, such as this one, have also their benefits  for the runners themselves. They are a great work out for our quads. Ironically, they are also a practical way to avoid injuries. Overuse injuries can happen so people just run, run, run. Our bodies have muscle memory and the best way to challenge them without getting stuck in an overuse rut is to mix it up.  Run not just on the road but run also in the mountain trail or up a building.

Surely, this BPI Vertical Run accomplishment of Ernie will make him a stronger runner.  He would need to be as he aims to conquer the upcoming 2013 Bataan Death March 160K Ultra. “Puwede.”

Congratulations to the officers and members of the BPI Runners Club for the BPI Vertical Run. May it continue to be a regular undertaking (quarterly or annually?).  We need more variety in the local running scene. Does the Bicolano Penguin (BP)  get an invite next time? Hahahaha...............Running is free.

Your welcome Ernie. Your achievement is an achievement of our batch as well. We continue to run true with our mission of being the runningest batch of the Ateneo de Naga. May you example serve to inspire more of our fellow 83neans to take up the beautiful sports of running. You are fortunate to be part of the BPI Runners.
