I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

MICHELLE ESTUAR’S FUNd RACING: A Rare Wednesday Fun Run

Fun runs in  Metro Manila are usually held on weekends, mostly on Sundays and a few on Saturdays.  Rarely are running events scheduled on a weekday.  Perhaps once every blue moon.   It is therefore a delight to know that there is a  fun run on the last Wednesday of this November.  For working stiffs like me in the Philippines, November 30 (the last Wednesday) is a non-working holiday by virtue of it being  the birthday of Andres Bonifacio, the founder of the proletarian revolutionary  Katipunan Movement.

By coincidence, the fun run scheduled for November 30 is  also a birthday celebration, albeit belated. The fun run is  Michelle Estuar’s Birthday FUNd Racing for the Kids of Tuloy Foundation.

Race details are as follow:

Race time:                   5:00 am
Venue:                         Ultra Oval, Pasig City
Race Categories:          5 kms and 10 kms
Registration:                Online (via Facebook wall of this event) and Onsite (up to
       November 27)  at   A Runner’s Circle, R.O.X., and Sketchers
       Branches
Registration fee:          FREE.  Donations are highly encouraged.

Yup.  You read it right.  There is no registration fee, but participants are encouraged to donate an amount which will then be given to Tuloy Foundation, Inc.   Founded in 1993 by Fr. Marciano “Rocky” Evangelista of the Salesians of Don Bosco, it is a non-government and non-profit organization accredited with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to care for the street children.  The Tuloy Foundation has a 4.5 hectare compound in southern Metro Manila where children are nurtured to learn, grow  and transform themselves.

We talked about the beneficiary of this November 30 fun run.  Who then is the leading light of this honourable athletic event of giving back to the community?

Who is Michelle Estuar?

She is one of the top elite lady competitors in the Philippine running circuit. She is also a lovely and refreshing presence  in the local running scene.  And as the frontrunner magazine broadcasted in its August 2011 cover, Michelle Estuar is Beauty, Brains + Brawn personified.   Need proof on brains, she graduated cum laude from her BA Psychology in UP, the premier learning institution in the country.  Need proof on beauty , go check out the picture of the said cover. Need proof on brawn,  go buy the magazine and read the cover story by Associate Editor Celyn Trinidad.

Frontrunner Magazine's favorite cover
Last December 2010, I first heard her name at the awarding ceremony of the 2010 Corregidor International Half Marathon where she bested all female comers to win 21-km top honors.     However,  I have not had the chance to get to meet her personally and talk about her passion for running.  But things may change as they always do.

That is why I will be joining the November 30 fun run.    I will also bring along my son to run with me the 5 kms on that Wednesday.  It will be good for him to experience donating to a worthwhile cause like that of Tuloy Foundation.  It will also do him good to witness a graceful gazelle of a runner in action.  Correction:  it will do many of us a lot of good.

See you guys   at the Michelle Estuar’s FUNd Racing for the Kids of Tuloy Foundation.

It will be fun to donate.  It will be fun to run.
