BICOLANO PENGUIN ANNIVERSARY RUN: November 2, 2012 at Tiwi-Sangay Road

My Bicolano Penguin blog will be turning 1 year this November 5.  Thru the  weeks and months, this blog has churned 105 articles, mostly about running and a handful about food, the runner’s best friend.  In a year, the blog has elicited more than 10,000 page views.  We can safely say that this baby is an active one.  Not precocious but a bouncing one.

How does one celebrate the 1st birthday?

Simple, let us have an anniversary run.  Living up to the Running is free spirit, it will be a run with no registration fees.  Consequently, no race bib and no singlet.  Just the runner and the road, hopefully with a handful of running buddies to keep us company.

When?  November  2  looks promising given that it is part of a four-day weekend.  Ideal start is 5am.

Where? Why not the whole length of the Tiwi-Sangay Road?  Ever since my tour of this  road last July 13 (http://www.bicolanopenguin.blogspot.com/2012/07/tiwi-sangay-road-pictures-from-recon.html#more), a few friends  and I have been salivating about tackling the 41-km distance from the Church of St. Andrew in Sangay, Camarines Sur to the Church of San Lorenzo in  Tiwi, Albay.  It is both a lovely and lonely road. There is an abundance of breathtaking  views of the sea, an island and the cliffs but there is a lack of sari sari  stores along the route that can provide hydration and sustenance.  A support vehicle will be needed. Given this consideration, I can only handle at most 10 runners. Beyond 10, we would be needing more than one support vehicle.

Who?  The first 6 slots of this anniversary run are reserved for  my fellow 83neans. The next  4 slots are open for running friends based in Manila or in Bicol. Anyone interested can post a comment in this blog.

Participants who conquer the whole length of the Tiwi-Sangay Road will get a finisher shirt. Not a dri fit shirt but a cotton gray shirt. The shirt’s design is courtesy of my talented officemate at First Balfour, Dolly Pasia. We will also have lunch and dessert at DJC Halo-Halo & Snack Inn  in Tiwi. The halo-halo is something to die for.

At the end of the day, I expect the Bicolano Penguin Anniversary Run as an easy training run among running buddies and new friends. More like a Galloway runfest for 6 hours, at the pace of a penguin. The special part of this run is that it will be done along the Tiwi Sangay Road, one of the newer and lovelier roads in the Bicol Region.Virgin running territory.

Just right for after all, the Bicolano Penguin truly loves Bicol and this is one great way to show that running is more fun in our part of the Philippines.

Thank you Ernie. You are the first to register in writing. Looking forward to more 83neans and kindred runners signing up. Likewise, a couple of Bicol-based runners have texted their intentions to run the Tiwi Sangay Road with us on Nov 2.

Thank you Ed. You are the second to register in writing. Thank you too for the suggestion on making this an annual thing. A good suggestion and there are certainly many places in Bicol where we could do the anniversary runs. Every year, a different place. We just have to focus, for now, on the first one.
