Buta, the pig,
is spending the last week of October in our house. Our son, Marcel, brought the pig with him from
class.
Lest you guys
are thinking we are starting a piggery in the village, allow me to explain.
“Feed the Pig”
is the battle cry of the 41 members (including Marcel) of the Pignatelli
section in Grade 7 as they endeavor to raise funds under the annual
Bigay Puso Program of the Ateneo de
Manila Grade School. The object of
their interest is the pink-colored piggy bank which the students have named
“Buta”, pig in Japanese. Every week, a
particular Pignatelli student brings the pig to their home where family
members, relatives and friends can drop a coin or a peso bill that will add to
the war chest of the Grade 7 class.
Thus far, this
innovative way to raise funds has proven to be effective. To date,
Pignatelli is ranked 3rd among the thirteen Grade 7 sections in amounts raised for the
Bigay Puso. I was informed by my son
that the target beneficiary of the Grade 7 funds is a Gawad Kalinga community
in Fairview, Quezon City.

Kudos to the
students and teacher for making fund raising an enjoyable affair. Helping others can indeed be made fun.
