I am a Bicolano by birth and choice. By any standards, I am a slow runner but I like it that way. I look at running as a healthy and exciting way to make a difference. Together with my fellow runners from our family, school, office, and the community, we use running to give back.

MARATHONS R US

Not 1 but 2.  This is the number of full marys that our swash buckling runners of the Ateneo de Naga HS Batch 1983 conquered this December 2, 2012. And the reach of the 83neans is all over the region in this marathon of marathons.

Here in the National Capital Region, 3 studs   tackled the Quezon City International Marathon (QCIM). This full marathon passed thru significant national  landmarks from the Quezon Memorial, Sto. Domingo Church, La Mesa Eco-Park to the University of the Philippines – Diliman Campus. The finish time of the Metro Manila-based 83neans at the QCIM are as follow:

Bob Castilla     - Below 5 hrs but steaming
                      mad due to organizers’ mix
                      up on the start time
Ernie Badong    5 hrs flat
Ruben Fajardo  -  5 hrs & 42 mins.

QCIM 42km route
Further south and crossing national borders, in the undisputed premier city of the ASEAN Region, our favorite Bitoy Lorico ventured into virgin territory and survived the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore.  His finish time for the 42 kms is 6 hrs & 35 minutes. We hope to hear soon his story. He now is our latest 83nean marathoner, bringing   to 10  the total for our high school batch, the runningest in Ateneo.

Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore

Our latest 83nean marathoner
The QCIM 83neans showed their solidarity with our new marathoner by writing words of encouragement  to Bitoy on their bib. Such is the brotherhood of runners.  It knows no borders.

Bob’s

Fard’s

Ernie’s
As for Bicolano Penguin, I was not in the running as December 2 is our wedding anniversary. But hearing my siblings congratulating  and thanking profusely my wife for surviving  my  bossy and  insensitive ways all these 15 years (and counting) leads me to postulate that I, too, was celebrating a marathon on that day. Only, this is of the matrimonial kind and my Commander-In-Chief deserves a ton of medals.  She would need all the encouragement, affirmation and a second wind as this marathon is going ultra.

A different kind of marathoners
Mabuhay satuya gabos na adik sa marathon!
