2013 BDM 58-KM TEST RUN: San Fernando to Capas

At 2:23 am this December 23 morning, I texted  Bob Castilla, Ernie Badong and Ruben “Fards” Fajardo inquiring about the test run.

The three 83neans were participating in a 58-km test run from San Fernando, Pampanga (Km 102)  to Capas, Tarlac (Km 160)  organized by the Bald Runner (Ret. Gen. Jovie Narcise) mostly for the Bataan Death March 160-km ultra marathon scheduled for the last week of January 2013. Fards and Ernie have registered and will run this 160-km ultra.

At 2:48 am, I received a text from Bob :  “Done already. Waiting for Fards and Ernie.”

At 3:50 am, a text from Fards: “Successfully hurdled the test run.”

At 3:53 am, Ernie’s text read: “Just finished the test run in 9hrs and 56 mins. Cut off time is 12 hrs.  Miss ka namin.”

At 4:02 am, I texted to all 3  : “Galing.”

At 4:03 am, Fards responded for him and Ernie: ”Nilakaran naming last 10 kms.”

The last text speaks volume.

It tells me that Fards and Ernie are ready for the 2013 BDM 160-km ultra, the biggest of all kahunas in the local  ultra running world.  They are not yet satisfied with their performance and this thirst will fuel them some more and prove to be pivotal in their quest.

A quest that will have them follow in full the heroic footsteps of the original Bataan Death March veterans.

Epic indeed.

thank you BP! we really missed you. at the briefing, Bald Runner told the warriors not to run with gusto but to familiarize with the environment as if like we already passed km102. to internalize the feeling of exhaustion, starving, no sleep, aching etc. and to observe safety on the road. and we did. started gallowaying at 5:1 and at 35km, 3:1. mahirap talaga yung last 10k, "pamatay" and finished at almost 10hrs. if we could pass km102 at less than 18hrs cutoff time say 16hrs, we can do it. see you on our next run at B? hehehe merry christmas!!!

Thanks BP, your write up continue to inspire us. After that 58kms test run,I realized that this (160kms)will not be a "walk in the park" I need to practice some more and to be in good physical running condition and in very good health from hereon til D-day (26-27 Jan 2013)...see you on the road! Merry Christmas!
